Tax

Latham & Watkins has a long and rich history with the Internal Revenue Service dating back to founding partner Dana Latham, who served as Commissioner of the IRS under President Eisenhower. Today the firm still enjoys an excellent reputation with the IRS and the US Department of the Treasury and our Tax Department includes more than 100 attorneys located around the globe.

Several of Latham's offices have earned high placements among their top competitors in International Tax Review's "World Tax 2010" rankings, and the firm was recently named “Leading US Tax Firm in Europe” at the European Tax Awards for the second consecutive year. In addition, our US tax practice ranked among the top tax practices in the Chambers & Partners USA 2010 guide, our French practice received top tier rankings in the Chambers Europe 2010 guide, which also recognized our German and Spanish practices, and our UK practice was recognized for corporate tax and employment in Legal 500 UK 2009. Latham also distinguished itself in the Chambers Global 2010 guide with recognition for our tax and REIT work around the globe. Many of our tax partners were ranked highly by Chambers among tax practitioners in their respective markets.

Because tax matters are an integral part of doing business, our tax attorneys serve as an essential component of our clients' transactional teams. Our tax practitioners work closely with colleagues in the Corporate and Finance Departments in structuring a wide variety of complex business transactions. Global in scope, our tax group advises clients on the international cross-border aspects of their transactions and operations.

When tax disputes arise, our experienced tax controversy practitioners can help resolve the issues as favorably as possible, whether in audits, administrative appeals, or in federal and state trial and appellate courts. Our benefits and compensation attorneys provide ongoing counsel for numerous employers throughout the world, and play an important role in corporate mergers, acquisitions and divestitures, advising clients as to the benefits, compensation, releases and transfer issues involved in such transactions. Our attorneys also advise on all aspects of nonprofit corporation law and the taxation of exempt organizations, including unrelated business income, private inurement and other related issues.
